Why should you learn Vietnamese?
Hi, my name is Johny, a Vietnamese living in Ho Chi Minh City – a vibrant city of the country. Today, it’s my pleasure to give my thoughts on why foreigners should learn Vietnamese to you, the readers of Hot Language.
Obviously, there are different reasons to learn Vietnamese such as:
- Traveling: To talk with local people to ask for directions or buy a “ca phe sua da” (iced milk coffee)
- Communication: To impress Vietnamese girlfriend or to have a deeper conversation with your Vietnamese spouse/husband and family
- For the love of language learning
- …
Most of the purposes do not require you to dig deep into the language, and that’s totally fine to simply cross off one thing from your bucket list. However, I do believe that learning Vietnamese will give you meaningful values in your life. Let’s find out:
1. For career development
Vietnam has developed rapidly which attracts many multi-national companies to expand to the country for production and commercialization. Some famous names include Samsung, Lego, Nike, Adidas … With the expansion, those firms are in short of professionals who can converse in Vietnamese. The same situation happened in Thailand, Korea and China years ago.

Since there are not many foreigner professionals who are able to communicate effectively in Vietnamese, I believe this is a huge opportunity for anyone who grasp the chance to learn Vietnamese for business. Less competition, low living cost, competitive salary and bonuses , high promotion chance …
2. For entrepreneurship
For someone who loves to work on his own dream, Vietnam can be your second home. For decades, Vietnam has been a manufacturing hub of the world in the fields of textile, plastic goods, furniture, agricultural products, etc.
With the aid from knowing the local language, you may pursue an import-export business between Vietnam and your home country, to exchange necessary goods from both sides.
I also know some entrepreneurs who come to Vietnam to manufacture goods from their creative designs, for eg. shoes/pop-up cards/wooden toy …, to commercialize on online platforms such as Amazon and eBay. The profit margin is decent and safe since they can control the whole operation.
3. For finding your loved one
Vietnam will soon reach 100 millions people. Naturally, Vietnamese people are diligent, dedicated, and family-oriented.
More than 60% of our population are “young” people from 18 to 45 years old, which means there are a lot of opportunities for you to find your loved one when you happen to be open-minded.
From my observation, Vietnamese has become more open to getting married with foreign partners. However, the language barrier seems to be the frequent obstacle in the relationship. Learning Vietnamese is definitely an easy way to impress Vietnamese partner.
Conclusion
Vietnam has many things to offer and Vietnamese language may provide you with different benefits, including career development, becoming an entrepreneur, and finding your spouse.
